Cloud Seeding

Cloud Seeding, a form of weather modification, is the attempt to change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds, by dispersing substances into the air that serve as cloud condensation or ice nuclei, which alter the microphysical processes within the cloud with the intent to increase precipitation (rain or snow), but hail and fog suppression are also widely practiced in airports. In India, Cloud seeding operations were conducted during the years 2003 and 2004 through U.S. based Weather Modification Inc. in Maharashtra, in 2008, 12 districts of Andhra Pradesh were seeded as well.

The Indian government has utilized the American method of cloud seeding technology before, but now it is working to develop its own techniques to ensure that monsoon clouds will yield torrential rains. It will be funding a three-year experiment to find the best way to seed the monsoon clouds that appear across the sub-continent between June and September every year.

Srishti Aviation utilizes two pressurized twin engine Cessna 340 aircraft for its cloud seeding operations. The aircraft are equipped with two 310 horsepower Continental engines. A full de-ice boot system is also installed on each aircraft to provide protection in icing conditions. On the ground at the radar facility the Meteorologist will assign the pilot the cloud that has a high concentration of super cooled liquid water. Seeding is generally at cloud base. At cloud top the aircraft will find the altitude where the temperatures are about -5 ºC. This is the altitude at which the seeding agent is most active.
